Men’s Sexual Health

Specialist psychosexual therapy for men experiencing difficulties with erections, ejaculation, desire, orgasm, sexual confidence and intimacy.

Sexual difficulties are common and can arise at any stage of life. They may develop suddenly or gradually and can be influenced by physical health, medication, stress, anxiety, relationships, previous experiences and changes in life circumstances.

At The Fitzroy Practice, we work with men experiencing erectile difficulties, premature or delayed ejaculation, low or fluctuating desire, difficulty reaching orgasm, performance anxiety, compulsive sexual or pornography use, and changes in sexual function following illness or medical treatment.

Psychosexual therapy provides a confidential space to understand what may be contributing to the difficulty. Rather than focusing only on sexual performance, we consider the relationship between physical, psychological, emotional and relational factors and how these may be affecting your sexual wellbeing.

Understanding what may be affecting your sexual wellbeing

Sexual difficulties rarely have one simple cause. Anxiety about sexual performance can itself affect arousal and sexual response, while difficulties with erections, ejaculation or desire can lead to further anxiety, avoidance and loss of confidence.

Psychosexual therapy allows us to understand these patterns and consider what may be maintaining them. Depending on your needs, the work may include psychoeducation, behavioural sex therapy, strategies for reducing performance anxiety, exploring relationship patterns and communication, and understanding the emotional experiences connected with sex and intimacy.

The aim is not simply to improve sexual function, but to help you develop a more comfortable and confident relationship with your sexuality, whether you are attending individually or as part of a couple.

Sexual difficulties we can help with

  • Men seek psychosexual therapy for many different reasons. Some of the difficulties we commonly work with include:

    • Erectile difficulties (erectile dysfunction / ED)
    • Premature ejaculation (PE)
    • Delayed ejaculation (DE)
    • Difficulty reaching orgasm or anorgasmia
    • Low or fluctuating sexual desire
    • Performance anxiety and anxiety around sex
    • Desire discrepancy between partners
    • Compulsive sexual behaviour or pornography use
    • Sexual avoidance, fears or phobias
    • Concerns about sexual experience or confidence
    • Changes in sexual function associated with antidepressants or other medication
    • Sexual difficulties following illness, cancer or medical treatment
    • Changes in intimacy within long-term relationships

Psychosexual therapy is tailored to the individual rather than the diagnosis. We consider your sexual history, physical health, relationships, emotional wellbeing and the circumstances in which the difficulty occurs. Where appropriate, we may also recommend that physical or medical factors are investigated alongside the therapeutic work.
